The era one of the flamboyant journalists in cinema journalism and political journalism VN Subba Rao come to an end today morning at MS Ramaiah Hospital. He was 81 years of age leaves behind two sons. His wife died a few years ago. VN Subba Rao profession is concerned, he achieved greatness from his ability to write in English and Kannada – he was outstanding because no one carried the political journalism and cinema journalism together.

A producer of ‘Haavu Eni Aata’, ‘Premayana’ VN Subba Rao was writing for a long time to Screen film weekly. He was in Express publications heading the Karnataka bureau from Bangalore edition.

The former chair person of Madhyama Academy had perfect mind in this media and his contribution to society is impeccable. He was associated with various organizations and High Power Committee to submit a report on how Kannada cinema industry should be was a classic work, his work during the Golden Jubilee of KFCC, his effort in bringing out two volumes of History of Kannada cinema are unforgettable.

VN Subba Rao received many challenges in his career and won successfully. The first challenge in professional career he received was when he came back to Indian Express and that was the exit of E Raghavan and gang to The Times of India, Bangalore in 1987.

Recently demised E Raghavan was chief reporter when VN Subba Rao came back again. With E Raghavan his colleagues in the Bangalore Branch of Indian Express – KL Ranganathan, Boppanna, Nazreen Bhura, Imran Quereshi, Allen Mendonca and photographer P Sarangapani resigned and joined E Raghavan in The Times of India Bangalore.

That was also the time of TJS George as Editorial Advisor in Express Bangalore. At this stage V N Subba Rao built the team with Ramakrishna Upadhya, G.Viraat Singh, Nupur Basu, Sharitha Rai, Sudheer Narasimhan, MA Devaiah, Uttara Kumari, K Govindarajan, S Shankarappa and the new unforgettable photographer at that time K Gopinathan. The anti establishment stories with TJS George and V N Subba Rao earned laurels for Bangalore Edition of Indian Express.

V N Subba Rao had greatest memory power in him. From morning till evening at Assembly or Council he never used to jot down points. It was straight from head to typewriter to pass it on to the desk. Working with VNSR during the elections time is another experience. With Khadri Shamanna opposite chamber heading the Kannada Prabha, K Sathyanarayana, Pattabhiram, Garudanagiri Nagaraj, Mahadevappa, Srikanth Nadiger, Su Ramakanth, Narayanaswamy, C Sitaram the Kannada Prabha was also equally strong like VNSR team of Express in the eighties and 90’s.

A strict disciplinarian VNSR always insisted on cleanliness in every work. For journalists he set guidelines for behavior while TJS George brought in style book for journalists. No one enter the office taking even beer. No cigarette was allowed when VNSR was around. For the journalists who used to have beer in the cocktail lunch of corporate press meets, VNSR used to ask them go home and come tomorrow. Likewise the dressing sense was appreciated in his regime as bureau chief of Express.

The district headquarters VNSR toured and made right selection for heading the units. He was also responsible for facsimile edition coming up. VNSR was very much liked by Express media baron Ramnath Goenka. During the controversial elections in Chickmagalur VNSR was strong man for Ramnath Goenka.

Political Commentary on Monday of VN Subba Rao in Indian Express was widely read. Likewise his columns in cinema were torchbearers. Dr Rajakumar, Dr B Saroja Devi, Dr Vishnuvardhana, Ananthnag and various others had high regard for VNSR cinema writings.

For Screen Film Weekly VNSR started contributing on Kannada cinema and it was a big opening for Kannada filmdom.

One of the strongest journalists after suffering for more than two months on account of cancer had a quiet ending in life. No ritual was conducted and it was a simple cremation at Banashankeri.
